2)   Two new ski lifts have been added.

3)   Unlike the beach you won’t see creepy middle-aged guys in Speedos.

4)   FIS World Cup Boardercross (first time in Argentina) – September 6-13.

Summer Skiing in Portillo

June 25, 2008 by gorover

We’re just guessing, but Portillo could easily be an acronym for Powder Ordinarily Remains Tremendous Into Late Late October. This year should be no different. After just barely three weeks into the ski season, Portillo has already received 198 inches of fresh powder.

There’s a reason why Portillo ranks as South America’s oldest ski area – they know what they’re doing.

Summer Skiing in South America 2008

June 9, 2008 by gorover

High-five applause to Valle Nevado for pooh-poohing  paraskavedekatriaphobia and opening the ski season on Friday, June 13th.

Located in Chile’s Andes Mountains, just a water bottle’s throw from Santiago, Valle Nevado offers the largest skiable terrain in the southern hemisphere. And because it’s located at 9,924 feet, the entire mountain is above tree line (imagine Mother Nature after getting waxed), providing long, stretching runs for every level and the type of eye-bulging scenery normally only reserved for bearded National Geographic Magazine photographers.

Opening day calls for partly cloudy skies with the temperature in the high 30’s – perfect weather to thumb Friday the 13th fears.

Skiing in June

June 3, 2008 by gorover

June in most North American ski resorts signifies the arrival of Music Fests, Film Fests, Food Fests, Wine Fests, Pasty City Guys in Docker Shorts Fests…Serving reminder that you won’t ski again for at least another five months. Unless, of course, you book a flight to South America for the start of Argentina’s ski season.

Las Leñas, in particular, rates as one of the best South American areas to satisfy a ski fix. The mountain is still ten days away from opening (June 13th), yet already has 158 inches of powder at the summit (11,253 feet). It’s not often you see the words “mid-season ski conditions” and “June” used in the same sentence.

4)   Daily grooming report includes tips on moustache trimming.

March Madness Ski Town Style by Go Rover

March 22, 2008 by gorover

While most of the populace believes March Madness refers to college basketball, we, at gorover.com, believe it more aptly applies to skiing. The mindsets of skiers radically change as soon as March arrives.

The ski sunblock fanatics are a prime example. These are the people who from November through February exhibit the mindsets of extreme depth marine life by spackling their cheeks with sunblock on an hourly basis. Not just any sunblock but the type that is the cream equivalent of Carlsbad Caverns.

And they always self-righteously badger you about it like they’re the mountain’s self-appointed sunblock marshals, “Gotcha’ your sunblock on? Gotcha’ you sun block on?”

But come the first of March when the temperature begins topping 36 degrees they are the first ones to be whooping down the slopes in bikinis or baggie shorts and griping at day’s end about safety bar tan lines.

March also brings a change in tolerance for care of equipment. Serious-minded skiers, who just two months prior were hissing at other lift line occupants for inadvertently grazing the back tips of their $700 skis, are now skimming across manmade ponds with these same skis while costumed as Sponge Bob in thermal square pants.

And March also changes attitudes towards conditions. In November there is no second-guessing sharing one Mohawk-thin trail of man-made snow with 13-hundred other fanatics. But come March, the same skiers who were describing November’s three-inch base as “mind-bending fabulous” are grumbling at a base that’s deep enough for Paleoclimatologists to extract ice core samples from.
